Mini Convention
Wednesday is the Mini Convention at SRU. As a P.E. major I feel like I don’t know very much about it at all. I am in PETE Club and PEK and I still don’t know everything that it incorporates. Maybe it is my own fault for not getting more active in participation, but I did sign up to be on a crew and help out. Which, we won’t find out till the night before what we are doing to set up etc. This kind of stinks because we have to basically drop what we are doing if what they need us to do is during the time that we are somewhere else. I feel like the people who run it are the only ones who know what’s going on. :(

PE Required Heart Rate Monitor
I have one of the heart rate monitors that we are required to buy for our PE classes. My question is why do we not buy heart rate monitors that have a built in pedometer? If we are using them in class it meets the needs of the class requirements, but outside of class it falls short of a runner or exercisers needs. When I use it outside of class I can never tell how far I have run. I would like to be able to see the miles I have gone, not just how high my heart rate got. There has to be other heart rate monitors that we can get a good package deal on that have more useable options. If we have to buy one, we should buy one that has everything on that an athlete and teacher could utilize.

Office for Students with Disabilities
I have worked at the Office for Students with Disabilities for three years. It is a great place for people with disabilities on campus to get support. There are endless accommodations that we can give a student. For example, readers and writers on tests, unlimited testing time, testing in quiet area, notes, etc. I would recommend that people in our major also volunteer there. It is a great way to rack up massive amounts of volunteer work by taking notes and being a reader. The office is located in 122 Bailey Library. The main phone extension is 724-738-4877.

My Usual Complaint
How can SRU preach that we as physical educators are teaching children to fight obesity when we don't have a nutrition class? So, we teach kids how to play life time games like play horse shoes, because that makes you physically fit and healthy. Why don't we cut out an easy A class, and fill it in with a nutrition course. We aren't even close to certified to tell a child what to put into their bodies, we know nothing about diet. I think that if anyone wants to be a credible health teacher they should be schooled in nutrition and diets. If we say "Diet and exercise to lose weight." And a child asks, "What’s a good diet on a daily basis?" The most we are certified or able to say is look at a food pyramid. That isn't teaching our students to really eat healthy and balanced meals. If it was, obesity wouldn't be an epidemic.

ACIS Fitness
For the students who use the ARC facility on a regular basis: Did you ever see the little blue or yellow cards around? They were near the front desk where you walk in a little bit ago. These cards basically get you free stuff for using the ARC and working out. First, you fill out part of the card that gets ripped off with your name, e-mail, school etc. This part of the card enters you into a giant drawing to win a bicycle. From there on out, you just carry the card with you and when you go to the gym you get an employee to sign it to verify that you were there on that day. It goes by weeks. After you get 10 credits, or 5 weeks, you get a water bottle for free. After 20 credits you get a draw string backpack. After 30 credits you get a t-shirt. So, if you go to the ARC on a regular basis and want free stuff...you should look into this. ACIS Fitness Cards.

SRU Track and Field

Nick Kennedy. PE Major and Jav. Thrower.
Today was the Slippery Rock University Track and Field Invitational. As a physical education major I think that it should be important that the students in our major show more of an interest in sports on campus. If we are future coaches and sports advocates, why does our major not encourage more participation and viewing of sports. Instead of giving bonus for attending an on campus event, why not make it an on campus sporting event. I don't know what the answer is, I just wish our sports teams had more caring spectators and fans. It would be good for portfolios and experience building for people in our major to help out at sporting events. The track team even pays people who help at the meets. Just my thoughts for the day.
